Barbara Howard has been working with Dr. Schmitz since 2005. She started her nursing career as a registered nurse in 1975. This journey has allowed her to get extensive experience in a variety of areas in the health care field. The most rewarding has been women’s health care and adolescent health. She is most passionate about the decision to attend and complete the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) program in 1992 with University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Upon completion, Barbara relocated to Tyler Texas and became Maternity Coordinator of Smith County Health Department, managing patients in the indigent program. She became very active in outreach programs, public forums and teen education classes in reference to health issues, sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy prevention. Barbara also had a rewarding experience with Scott & White’s “Worth the Wait Program” as healthcare educator for adolescent sexual health concerns. This life-changing experience has brought her to a more holistic philosophy in the care provided and agreed upon between patient and provider.
Barbara has continued to expand her knowledge and role as a Women’s Health Provider by completing education and training certification from MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2008 in Colposcopy for patients with abnormal pap smears. Barbara has also received education and training to provide various methods of contraception as well as IUD and Nexplanon® insertions.
Barbara has two married children and two grandchildren, who are amazing! The first one was delivered at North Austin Women’s Center by one of the certified nurse midwives. She loves to read, hike, tent camp, travel as well as a variety of other outdoor activities. She also has a passion for smooth jazz.
